Good evening everyone! I've got a quick question I'd like to get some opinions on, if you'd all be so helpful.
My manager is asking to see my Driver's License and Social Security card, and when I asked why, they told me it was for security/background purposes. I've been with the company for 15+ years, so I'm not sure why they would need this information again, since it should be on file. They told me they do it every 5 years, but I do not remember having to show them my SS card in the past, only when I was hired.
Does this sound fishy? Or is it just me? I read online that there are official IRS and SSA websites that employers are supposed to use to verify SSNs and names. If this is the case, then why are they asking me? It also says online that an employee is not obligated to provide a physical copy of their SS card to an employer unless the employee is suspected of using a SSN and/or name that are not registered with the IRS/SSA.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I'd like to hear what you all have to say on the matter.
Thank you for any and all input!
