No they weren't in 1997.

....but cool story though.

Mine sure were. My particular center had vacation checks on payday, Thursday, 2 weeks in advance of your vacation from when I was hired in '87 to well after 2000. It was then reduced down to the Thursday the week before somewhere around 2008 to right up to when I retired in 2018. Everyone working at UPS should know by now that UPS does lots of things very differently region to region, even local to local. But that's OK. One of the simple pleasures I enjoy in life is witnessing just how confidently wrong people can be in online forums and social media.
