Yes he did refer to the established religious of His day in this way. The Pharisees who worshipped a written code and not Him. I suspect he didn’t find this humorous.

They knew a written religious code and knew not Him.

I suspect that He finds it no less humorous in this day regarding those who don’t believe in the Holy Spirit whom He sent to abide with and in us, and not simply in a book.
