Again, the scientists model the threat based on data from China that was purposefully inadequate and inaccurate.

How are you so clueless?
You must be an MSNBC viewer.

By Jan. 23, the WHO was already warning that coronavirus could “appear in any country,” and urged all countries to be “prepared for containment” and get ready to exercise “isolation” and “prevention” measures against its spread.

At around the same time, on Jan. 22, Trump was asked point-blank whether he worried about coronavirus’s spread, and he answered: “No, not at all,” insisting it was just “one person coming from China” and that “we have it totally under control.”

On Jan. 30, the WHO declared coronavirus a global public health emergency. While WHO was still too credulous toward China’s response, WHO also warned that all countries must review “preparedness plans” and take seriously what was coming.

By contrast, on Jan. 30, Trump was directly warned by his Health and Human Services secretary of the threat coronavirus posed. Trump dismissed this as “alarmist.”

On Jan. 26, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called on the Department of Health and Human Services to declare coronavirus a public health emergency, which would free up $85 million in funding for federal agencies. “Should the outbreak get worse they’re going to need immediate access to critical federal funds that at present they can’t access,” Schumer said.

Reuters has found that the administration took a month from the time it learned of the outbreak in late December to impose the initial travel restrictions amid furious infighting.

Some former NSC officials who spoke to Reuters traced what they saw as an ineffective response by the council in part to structural changes in 2018 in which former National Security adviser John Bolton had folded the council’s Global Health Security and Biodefense directorate into a larger operation, with the result that pandemic planning was not as great a priority.

And when the travel restrictions were imposed, the administration was accused of racism and xenophobia.

Whatever he was called was no excuse for not acting in a more aggressive manner. The intelligence was there, the warnings were there and the lesson for all Americans on both sides of the political isle is that this is just the beginning of what very well could be a very dangerous decade ahead.

"He should have been more racist!"

And the predictions for deaths can't be revised downward fast enough.

And thankfully after reading the estimated death toll the governors stepped in and took control of the situation.
Too bad some willfully ignorant people don't understand that those estimates were based on taking no action. I can't think of a single thing Trump ordered or proposed that stopped transmission. While some individual governors and mayors were already telling people to stay home, Trump was saying that everyone was recovering nicely and there would soon be no new cases.

Well over a million people were infected by a few infected people coming into the country. Now he wants to expose the other 325 million who haven't yet been exposed to thousands of people who are already here and have the virus. If a few people from China and Europe got us to over 30,000 dead, encouraging people to go back to work while tens of thousands here are still contagious should end up killing way more than Trump is claiming- he says less than 100k. He doesn't seem to get the people will still be dying from it after Aug 4, which is where the models quit counting. He is going to face a huge backlash by continuing to claim that death tally will be lower than a model that simply quit counting on a particular date. Most slow clowns don't read into the details, and they believe that deaths will be below that estimate, and praise Trump. I guess, for some, it matters whether 70,000 more people die by August 4th, instead of even more dying over a longer period.

Scientists don't even know yet if those who recovered remain immune for very long. A study in S Korea found that 30 people who had recovered out of 100 came down again with the disease. Whether they got a new case or whether they hadn't really cleared their original case isn't known. Tens of thousands more may die needlessly by returning to work and further spread the disease sooner than really necessary.

You seem to be taking it personally that bodies aren't piling up in the streets.

Maybe next time.
