Unused sick pay/vacation

What happens with unused sick time/vacation when you quit? I don't have any imminent plans of quitting or anything, but I'm kind of curious what happens to your time? Do they give you a payout or is it a "use it or lose it" kind of deal?

When I quit in '04 (came back in '05) I was paid unused sick, vacation and I think floaters, memory is little foggy on floaters.

It depends on the state you work. You receive unused vacation for the year as well as accrued vacation for the following year. Most states that is all you get and you forfeit any unused sick, PB, and floaters. In CA and NE you get your unused FH and PB paid. The sick pay is forfeited in all states.

You can find this policy in the Employment Law Reference Guide.

Often, if someone has been around awhile, especially retiring, there is an understood agreement that they have appointments or other issues requiring the use of sick days. Basically, managers stop really scheduling you and you use the MAP, PB and FH for your last days. Your local management may vary and I wouldn't do this for someone that is new, to me <5 years, unless it was known and understood they were pursuing education and would be moving into their career field upon graduation.
