UPS Plans to Cut Non-Driver Jobs to Mitigate Union Labor Costs

The new contract may be good for some but for others, perhaps not so much.
  • The company plans to discuss “headcount reductions” at an investor-day meeting in March
  • UPS cited “material productivity opportunities” at a breakfast meeting on Thursday with analysts
  • The job cuts would allow UPS to lower labor costs beginning in year two of the new labor contract, and the overall union workforce of about 300,000 currently may be lower at the end of the five-year contract

Um.. ie we aren’t rebidding retirement /inside jobs/ all combos, more places will have RPCD drivers deliver A.M. which means file grievances. Ramp up more automation facilities and consolidation small outlier buildings etc..

Sorry but the company really fked up when they wanted to go down to the wire with this contract…especially when O’Brien was on every nation news program imaginable. It shouldn’t take more than 4 weeks to hammer out something. Customers didn’t know what to do when negotiating went down to the last week…so many jumped ship. Can’t say I blamed them. Many are tired of the company and their bs games.
They like pushing it to the brink. This is not 97. These guys are newbies who don’t brown up in emergencies. Probably didn’t even have gear.

I consider myself living proof that in-house HR actually saves money in the long-run. And IE fell victim to the same problem as CS.
There is definitely too much management but IMO this is almost entirely due to terrible structure at the top. If a driver speaks management should listen, not the other way around. We all have our "dream" dispatch and route, overall adjustments that will never be implemented.

this is the tiniest part of IE, it's like a dozen people for the country and not at all what the dept as a whole works on or cares about

it's kinda funny really, the part that you all obsess over and imagine IE is slaving away to make you miserable, meanwhile it's a whole lot of nobody lol

Exactly the whole department is completely useless and adds no value or savings to the company.

Nobody wants a pension over a 401k….dude you must be a millennial…it is the exact opposite. Or how about a driver with a 401k and pension. My pension will pay me about 10-11k a month in local 639….Do you have any idea how much money a guy would need in a 401k to withdraw that kind of money?
What he was telling you is that your 401k is a horrible investment compared to a pension. If the stock market crashes your 491k is ruined.

Offer to pay up to 5 years pension contributions for all drivers willing to retire if said is done. We don’t want to be here and the younger guys are much more productive. This would be huge. It would hurt year 1, but productivity going forward would be nuts.
Lol, you obviously don't get it. In 5 years time you'd be back in the same position.

A stock invested 401(k) is "ruined" for maybe 3 years. Then it goes roaring back up so fast it outpaces inflation, giving the account holder an automatic COLA. I hope you're investing in one, in addition to your other holdings.

Yeah. You don't need many IE(s). Keep about 50 people and fly them to different centers so that they can adjust where the belts are setup. Once that is done, they move on to another center. You don't need IE all the time. It isn't like you re-arrange furniture every week.

Unless everyone and their dogs that adjust the belts are called "IE" which are not "Industrial Engineering".

You think that’s what they do?
