Organized religion would be doing itself a favor if it focused on getting more signatures on unrestricted free agent sinner contracts rather than trying to control the minds of the few people remaining in the pews today. An extreme ideology will do nothing to solve it's most critical problem and that's low revenue per pew. It can't go on forever heating and lighting empty pews.

Everybody wanted to throw them off the boat. Very many of them were discharged, and sent back home.

What did you expect? Communism and totalitarianism was the only thing they knew.
In the meantime a new, younger better educated generation of Ukrainians are coming on the scene who are clearly embracing Western culture and ideals. Mini Stalin sees that as a threat to old Russia and Russian Orthodoxy .While Ukraine is two thirds Orthodox it and Moscow's grip on the country was clearly fading away.
