I had some raspberry plants there, lasted about 5 years or so, then died out, and birds kept getting to them before I could.

That is a thought. I have some strawberry plants near but not beneath that blue spruce. They might give you some ground cover.

Or maybe another ground cover like stonecrop? I have some of this because it resembles the spruce.

That would look like the spruce pooped.

One giant failure I have here is Mock Orange. I have done everything possible and I can't get the sucker to bloom!

Euonymus? That stuff is super hardy. Or maybe vinca vine? Only problem I had with that was keeping it from spreading too far.

I used to own some vacant land and the power company had to cut down a bunch of pine trees that were crowding some secondary lines that crossed the property.

@oldngray said he doesn’t care for the bush. Even if it only takes a few minutes, why prep for and plant something he doesn’t like?
