If california wants to leave the US, I say let them have at it. But, as the saying goes, don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.

Yes, the state has a large (and still growing) economy. However, their recent rise in the state's economic ranking has less to do with the state's growth and more to do with the decline in other large economies.

The legalities aside, the biggest issue I see with a such an "exit" is, based upon the election results, the (mainly) northern and western parts of the state likely would rather stay in the US.

From a 2015 study , Calif. receives 37 % on its budget from the Federal gov't .
Trump could bring any ideas of leaving to a quick stop;
just by doing these 3 things .
Close Calif. Airports to foreign passengers & tourists .
Close Cal-Mex Border Entry to noncommercial traffic .
Suspend H1B & Student Visa applications to California .

Wouldn't he have to nationalize the airports and border in order to have any control over them?

Not really .
US Customs is a federal agency which controls the borders and airport entry points .
By shutting down US Customs everything stops and backups begin .
People arriving on planes will find themselves leaving on the same plane going home or to Canada .

Since you didn't link any study to backup the claim, I searched the following "2015 study california receives 37% of its budget from federal government" and found the following linked below. You can click the link and see if this study concurs with the previous claim made above. And at the Google search link above I found nothing specific to a 2015' study making the conclusions claimed but others may find it and maybe they will post it since the poster making the original claimed did not, raising the question if such 2015' study even exists at all.
