My plan is to let our pension fill in for some of the bond portion of my portfolio. The pension + social security is close to as rock solid as it gets. I can let my investments ride as mostly equities and still sleep at night… I think. Just my plan, anyway.

That’s true. If I decide to hang it up around 59 I might need investment income for 30+ years though. If I can get 5% real growth vs. 3% real then I think it’s worth the risk even in retirement to have a lot of exposure to stocks.
It doesnt seem so. I called maybe 15 yrs ago and got a no and the Summary Plan Description says options/margin among other things are prohibited.

The fees ate most of the potential advantages of the self managed account. I don't know about now but probably it used to be better to just leave your money in one of the (admittedly limited choices) funds.
