One of the popular attractions at the Dreamland amusement park in Coney Island was Lilliputia, better known as Midget City, which was part of the park when it opened in 1904. Lilliputia was an experimental community built in proportional scale to the residents as a replica of 15th century Nuremberg, Germany. Residents of the community consisted of 300 little people recruited from the four corners of the continent.
Most came from various World’s Fairs, travelling circuses and freak shows.
The community had its own parliament, beach, theatre, stables with small ponies, a laundry, and a fire department that put out purposely set fires hourly.
