No bbsam, I've seen the videos of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton being supportive of the Obama administration doing the exact same thing the Trump administration is doing. The difference is immigrants were getting court dates and being released into the population. Most never showed up for their hearing. The government made a farce of it but now we've got an administration enforcing the law. And that doesn't jibe with the goal of getting them all on the path to citizenship. Thus the histrionics.
Obama had a pilot program where asylum seeking families were given a social worker that helped them through the process after they were “caught and released.” They had an appearance rate of 99.6%. So I guess you’re correct if .04% is most not showing up for their hearing. BTW Trump canceled that program, because he’s stupid.

ICE Shuts Down Program for Asylum-Seekers - The Atlantic

Since January 2016, the program has served asylum-seekers in numerous cities across the U.S., including Chicago, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. According to a letter signed by Ann Schlarb, the senior vice president of The GEO Group—the prison company that runs the case management program—99 percent of the program’s participants “successfully attended their court appearances and ICE check-ins.” Schlarb even noted that “families have thrived” under the relaxed conditions.

The other part about that is the cost drops dramatically.

$600 a day per person for detention, $19 a day per person for electronic monitoring.

Think about it, they want to be here, if we give them an ankle bracelet and say ‘show up to court’ for a hearing, they show up.

Shh, don’t tell the “fiscal conservatives” that. I don’t even think we need the ankle bracelets, just give them a person that explains the system and they show up. They survived a significant ordeal to arrive on our border looking for help. They’ll do whatever we ask to be given the opportunity to stay.

The question is more when did we start arresting and charging first time illegal entry as a crime requiring separation? Every administration before this one chose not to do that.
