I Posted not too long ago about wait times to drive. Ive package handled at the hub for about 4 months now and got a call today to go in early next week because im "next on the bid list" for a "full time driving position". Im a bit skeptical because I spoke with her last week and she was on #20 on the list and I was In the 60s.

Also, after speaking with another HR woman, she told me that about 10% of pre loaders make it to full time drivers. Im vigorously learning the 5s and 10s for next week just in case, but whats a realistic expectation of whats to come. Is becoming a driver really that hard and why are they calling me in what feels to be early

At my building we are trying to fill driving spots as fast as possible for the last two years. Too many young people can't drive a manual shift or have the proper license or have too many violations or are too intimidated by the job. Try being out until 10 PM and being told that was a 6 hour planed day.

They’re making it harder and harder to pass probation. Just ask around for advice and if you really want it, it could be yours.

I still want to know where all those seasonal drivers we had last month are. We burn through drivers almost like the preload burns through loaders.

If I pass probation am I in the clear? After the probation for preload and they weeded out those who couldn't make it, the job became much more easier through practice for me. And i wasnt worried because i was in probation. Is driving the same, what is the probation like

I have been asking the drivers around, but it seems as if the drivers resent the loaders here. They're not the best source for questions ironically. It seems as if they dont want me to be a driver because it threatens them somehow

Your first 30 working days you are on the same training route everyday. Takes most new guys 20 working days to get the hang of it and qualify. After that they will just throw you out there blind. You will miss that easy training route. Also as the newest driver, and seniority rules, you can imagine what routes you will be running. The ones nobody else wants to do. This usually only last for about 5 years or more until you can bid your own route. At that point they will turn your route into a training route and you be out running junk routes again while someone else is training on your route.

They will coddle you for a few days and ride along before they cut you loose.

During that time, try and take as many mental/written notes as possible. If feasible, go out on the weekend and drive the route in your vehicle and get a feel for the area. When they cut you loose, your head is going to spin for a few days, so if you can eliminate area knowledge from the madness it may help.

They are going to expect daily/weekly progress in the amount of stops you can do and how long it takes you to finish the route. Whatever you do, do not substitute driving recklessly for efficiency. There is no quicker way to get eliminated then having an accident.

One of the most efficient things you can do is simply keep your truck sorted.

Anytime I look in the back of these rookies trucks, it looks like a bomb went off.

It may seem like you are wasting time, but you will more than make up for the 10-15 minutes it takes to sort a few shelves.

Totally disagree.
In my building, new drivers go out with a 6 hour plan for the 1st week. The supe that trained me was a 'sink or swim' supe. He sent new drivers out with a 10 hour plan with an 11 hour day mixed in for good measure. After 3 weeks, he would toss in an 8 hour day to see if you would do it in 8 or milk it. No EDD, no PAS, set up each section and find every package for a stop. Remember the stuff loaded in back (put a delivery notice on the stop before in the section it would have been it.)

New drivers really do not have it that tough. The only reason why anyone would think it is tough is because it is not an easy job. I would LOVE to have the 1st week dispatch of a new driver every now and then. It would be like a vacation.

Second paragraph? Wut? Screw that enjoy your weekend. It will be there's M toF. Learn in 5 days

100% agree. The thing that sinks rookies the quickest and sends them into a fully fledged freakout is a lack of area knowledge. You'll get the hang of the diad within a few hours and you already know how to load, so figuring out which streets are which ahead of time will make things a hell of a lot easier for you. Apart from that, noobies have to remember that everyone who drives has been in their shoes. When those inevitable moments of doubt sink in when youre frantically searching for a package in the back, take a minute or two, smoke a cigarette, calm down, and reset. Panicking will only make it worse.
