sober, we have had a female shepherd for the last 11 years and I agree that they are unpredictable. she heeds me 95 percent of the time but it is the other 5 percent that worries me. we don't let her alone with grandkids, our yard is fenced, we restrain her when the USPS or UPS guy comes around. on walks people ask me if they can pet her and I say NO.
years ago she tore up a guy who tried to break into our house. he tried to sue us but the judge threw it out because of his rap sheet. if he had no priors we could of been in trouble.
she's a great watch dog and as a night feeder driver it is a comfort knowing she is protecting the wife. I guess the maglight or other blunt object is your best bet. any time I have been attacked by a dog I always tried to kick the snout. the worse thing is to turn your back and run.
