Why would you retire with unused vacation? Wouldn't it be better to take those weeks so you are covered under the health plan for those weeks.

You're covered while you're working, no? Any unused vacation will be paid to you in a lump sum. That was my point, there's a lag in when benefits start so a nice lump sum to keep you afloat might be worth it to some. The vacation pay is paid right away in the final paycheck.
