Different son. This one graduated from Georgia Tech with an Aerospace Engineering a year ago. He hasn't been able to get a job yet in his field because he has no work experience. He has finally decided that maybe a few years in the Air Force might not be a bad idea.

"A few years in the Air Force" would require a minimum enlistment of 4 years active and 2 years inactive (reserve). He would get world class training and would then be able to write his own ticket upon separation.

This is a dilemma many college graduates face------employers want experienced workers, which makes sense, but how do you get experience without getting a job first?

Has your son looked in to internships, paid or otherwise? Is he on Linkedin?

My son was fortunate in that he found a job that offered a 3 year paid rotational training program with no commitment upon completion. The training he has received thus far, which has been "real world" rather than classroom, will more than prepare him whether he decides to stay with his company or to move on to a much larger firm.

He failed to take advantage of internships offered through Georgia Tech, big mistake on his part. He has already earned one of the hardest engineering degrees possible. He is setting up an appointment to see a recruiter now. I think he will be able to go to basic and officer's school and become a 2nd Lt. It will be good for him, its time to push him out of the nest.

Yes, he will go to basic training in San Antonio (TX) and then on to OTS in Montgomery (AL). He will be commissioned as a 2nd Lt and will have to serve at least 4 years active and 2 years inactive. He may be eligible for student loan reimbursement.

It will be good for him and will give him the training and discipline to start his professional career upon completion of his service commitment.
