How can UPS have different rules everywhere.

The one thing brown cafe has thought me is the shield is the same, but the operating rules that govern UPS vary widely from location to location. How can this be? This hub backs to save miles, this other hub is forbidden from backing. One hub has plus or minus 15 on their pick ups, others don't. One buildings padding stops, is another buildings business as usual. The list goes on and on. How can this be?

Bottom line:
We have the same corporate guidelines, however CMs and DMs come up with their own rules and some give unethical directives contrary to corporate policy. The only real valid local/regional difference is due to a supplement or rider. Aside from that, management should essentially be on the same page.

When you have a company whos whole business plan revolves around for the most part unattainable numbers you end up with people who don't care how these numbers are met--just as long as they can keep the next person up the ladder off their butt. The system is ripe for creating cheaters, liars and shortcut takers --- on both sides. If someone (hourly or especially management) can get away with not following the rules to make their numbers look better you can be sure they will do it if it. Hourly at least has some Union protection. NO RULE at UPS is carved in granite when it comes to how rules are interpreted when dealing with an employee. It all depends if you are one of their favorites or if you have a target on your back. That is why no two centers work under the same rules.

STUG referred to local centers as franchises with each operating on their own set of rules.

Each center is like a company within the company and management gets their bonuses based on the profit/loss within that center. Which also leads to numbers game with different departments trying to pass costs along to someone else even if it costs UPS more money as a whole - as long as that center shows more "profit".

Because Logistically it just makes sense. These manages and supervisors being ignorant to the contract and the rules is by design. They can say they didn't know. That has a lot of worth in there world.

Life's a lot easier at work at work stress wise when your not on the radar. The jobs nothing but 1 big mind game that's all. You figure out how to play it and roll with it. There's a lot of places in life where you play Hollywood. Ill play like Ali n play the rope a dope with you all night long until I get what I want or what i'm looking for after i've set you up with the reverse mind trap. Don't be that person who has the game played on you, come up with you own game for manipulation to get you where you need to go, but don't make it to over the top obvious. Be a smooth criminal not a stupid criminal and you'll find the job too be a lot easier mentally and less stressful, along with alot of other things in life also. Just have to use the power of your mind and think outside the normal box most people live and think out of.

States have their own problems and every hub is going to have different accidents and issues that arouse new rules and regulations...

Nobody knows it all, you do what works for ya in your own way. Everybody has different strategies and techniques for how they do things, that's for sure. Its all good as long as that person is comfortable in the way they do things, that's all that matters.
