I think it is foolish for modern society to label certain words as swears at all. Think about it, they are only words! How 'bout we treat the friend-bomb exactly as we treat the word "darn"? I mean, it IS the 21st century. We are not the Pilgrims!

But my argument is for "society". This is a privately owned website, and we must (try to!) abide by the administrators rules.

I think I read somewhere about the friend-word, It is an Anglo-Saxon word, It's original spelling is Focken and it means to beat against, people I kid you not.

I've read that also. And then some.
If anyone is really interested here is more on that dreaded word,

Interesting discussion :peaceful:

My real life vocabulary has been known to extend into our censored word list. There's nothing quite so satisfying as spitting out a sizzling friend-bomb after getting cut off by some kid zooming around in a souped up tin can.

The difference between that type of spontaneous verbal venting and posting on a public internet forum is that here it is likely that my words will be read by a couple of hundred people of varying sensibilities and life experience. When I'm cursing in my car it's only witnessed by me and anyone else that is unfortunate enough to be in the car with me. If I were a pilot of a plane with several hundred people onboard and found myself similarly frustrated I still might curse under my breath, but I wouldn't pick up the microphone and vent my frustration by dropping friend-bombs over the public address system.

Choosing words to post on a public internet forum requires a different type of vocabulary than your everyday life, out of respect for the diversity of the potential audience. Although you may be typing at home alone in your kitchen your words may be read by a diverse collection of several hundred people. I don't think that most of you would choose to use the language that we censor here if you were speaking in a public place, face to face with several hundred people from all walks of life.

Part of starting and maintaining a public forum involves making choices about all of the content. Language isn't the only thing that has to be considered here. Over the years I've removed posts about joining the North American Man Boy Love Association, pornographic photos, spam, overlabeling directions...

I have never removed or edited a post because I didn't agree with the opinion that it expressed. I have edited hundreds of posts because they contain immoral, illegal, unethical or vulgar content or language. There are hundreds of forums on the internet where they don't prohibit any of those things so if you find this one too restrictive I'm sure you can easily find another one that you'll like much better.

The rep point system, IMHO, is part of the flame problem on this site. Most people seem to rep people if they (the poster) slams someone they (the repper) don't agree with.

Another thing, it stifles people from posting because if someone disagrees with you and they have 40,000 rep points they can neg rep you back to zero at one time.

This site SEEMED more civil when everyone had roughly the same rep points, but over the last few months some people's rep points have jumped way, way up there.

Just my humble (and low rep) opinion.
BigBrown,

I agree with you completely with regards to your post. Personally Cheryl could get rid of the rep point system all together and it wouldn't both me in the least. I for one don't come here to earn "points" from people, i come here for the company of my co-workers around the country and to be able to communicate with them.

If I may be so bold as to answer this with another post!

I really like the rep system. When I read a really good post, I like to give feedback, and I like to know what people think of what I say, good or bad.

It's not so much about the points as it is about the feedback and communication!!

For the record, I do not come here for the rep points either. I like to read perspectives from others around the country, get/give a few chuckles, hear about things that are going to happen soon at work and every once in a while demonstrate the absurd by being absurd. I find it funny that over night my rep points quadrupled when I've not really said anything any different than what was already being said by others.

BTW, if any of you that repped me want to neg rep me, I will not be offended.

point taken tonyexpress. But I am not saying that the feedback and communications should also go away, just the ability to give points to and take points away from someone. I appreciate the feedback and the ability to communicate with others, but the point system just seems to lack a real purpose other than boosting or deflating someones ego on this forum.

Here is the beauty of it. Go to user cp, if you dont know, Im sure you do, top of pg to left. You can go see who repped you what way and why. Its fun, I enjoy it, even when I get negged. But it would be fun without also. Just funner with. As tonyexpress said the fun is in the communication.

I just wanted to say thanks to the mods for keeping BC clean. There are so many times my kids are looking at my computer just to see what I'm doing. Before anyone gets all worked up over my kids looking at this website we have a RULE in our house you will not ever cover up the computer if someone is around. It's called keeping you honest and having nothing to hide.

To the ones who think they have a right to blog on this site and throw around the friend-bomb and degrade people because your an adult, need to understand one simple tidbit. Like driving a vehicle, and agreeing to the terms and conditions, you don't have the RIGHT to be a BC Member, you have a PRIVLEGDE to be a member and must abide by these terms. If you don't like it, (Don't be like Eddie Murphy's "Uncle Gus" Cause) you can get the friend-bomb out of Cheryl's house.
Warning: Don't let the kids here this.

Its kind of funny seeing this debate go on while a new poster to this site actually has a friend-bomb posted in italian as his description and a picture of someone giving you the physical demonstation of the italian verse as his avatar.

The communication is fantastic as a way to oversee the whole UPS system worldwide and this is always a good thing. And I think everyone should get the freedom of speach as long as it does not offend any of the other individuals in the site.

It's kind of funny you didn't report this and instead posted it in this thread. We don't catch everything and rely on the members to report stuff like this.

Anyway Mr. Bonzo has been made aware that we don't tolerate vulgar language or content.:peaceful:

I should have been clearer:happy-very: I thought it funny as in Ha ha funny that this guy was slipping through the radar with his set up while we have had several threads running on the merits of censorship and debates on implied or abbreviated profanity. :happy-very:

Tie-Still doesn't answer why you didn't report it

I didn't find it personally offensive. Actually found it creatively hysterical. There is an effort here and I think rightly fully so to clean up some of the language issues here. There is also an effort by the free speech advocates to find creative ways to spice up normal dialogue. And thus I found it funny to see one slip through the cracks using Italian and a picture.

Could we all just let some of these threads die? Wastes too much time being negative. Instead of using spare times to nit-pick, payback and cry let's go over to the "life after brown" or other forums. There we could read, contribute and maybe get to know each other in a different way.

Most of us work for UPS, nit picking is what we do best. We have to be perfect 99% of our work day, or we get called into the office, confronted by management, confronted by the community. We are always having to answer for every decision we make. I know I am new to this community, but it is very informative, and a lot of the times, entertaining. Keep the Peace!! :peaceful:

I agree. Too much sensitivity being displayed as the two responses to what I thought was a funny incident shows.
