Major East Coast Blizzard

we live in the high sierra where "storms" like this are common place. in one month we had 199 inches and we are 1000 feet below the donner summit which got more than that.

it makes the local news but hardly the national. the media on the east coast needed a story so they are using this.

poster that said that people are stupid is pretty much right. out here people have something called "common sense" born out of experience. people that came out west seem to be a hardier lot. we are mostly prepared for emergencies. everyone on my block has generators, back up food supplies, extra gas for vehicles. 4WD trucks and cars, etc, etc.

we could go several months without power and getting to a grocery story.

and it doesn't make sense to me that people on the east coast couldn't do the same. last winter was a bear on the east coast. people should of learned by now.

any of you east UPSers can come stay with us if you come out here and we'll show you how it's done.

My center told us that we would be closed yesterday around 2ish. Is that considered a temp lay off or will we be getting paid?

Lol my local 676 Center is closed but FedEx just delivered a package to my door...

USPS is out delivering and picking up in NJ today.....but UPS is closed. Was UPS too cautious in making the call to shut down operations? Does the USPS not care about their employees in NJ? Is the USPS more focused on the customer?

Based on FedEx.com, most of their operations are shut down today in the Northeast.

The media just wanted to take every ones mind off the fact that Barry was out gallivanting around the world again accomplishing absolutely nothing but crossing off a few more countries he can get the taxpayers to foot the bill for his traveling expenses to. Olroadbeech, you live where you live. There is probably the same percentage of "stupid" people where you live as in NJ, but with the population density where I live I will be guaranteed to run into ten on my way to work. Doesn't make us any hardier or less. I just like living an hour or less from skiing, the beach, major cities, casinos, Walmart, drug dealers, and drive thru Starbucks. Maybe I'm one of the stupid ones. Lol. This storm could have affected 35 million people or more. It's a much bigger story than a storm trapping 100 people on a mountain.

Some totals are going to get close to the 35-40" range. Driven by 30+mph winds, that is absolutely paralyzing.

Right now, we've got the heaviest snow of the storm falling back this way. 2" per hour and perfect dendrites. "only" ~18" so far

I have a brother that lives in the UP. Upper Peninsula in Michigan. He has to shovel the snow off the roof of his house 5 to 6 times a year or the weight of the snow will cave it in.

I know he chose to live there, but he manages to survive.

we have had as much of 4 feet of snow on our roof. guys go around and offer to shovel the roof for 100-150 bucks and they get it too.

the building codes are so strict that newer homes like ours don't have a problem with snow loads.
