I'm thinking about joining the local volunteer fire department; not sure if I have enough time to make a meaningful contribution, though. Hmmm ...

Talk to any friends, friends of friends, co-workers that may be VF. If you come up empty speak with some of the officers of the VFD. There's usually a response quota at most departments that you need to meet. The initial training (academy) should be your biggest time commitment. Good luck, most volunteer departments are starved for members and will welcome almost all who are willing and qualify.
