This weekend I rode to a cruise-in where I got to watch people take their cars through a time trial on a coned course.

I do believe that is called autocross. A course set up on a large parking lot (or similar paved area) and times through the course are recorded for competition.

Pretty common.

Kinda cheap racing. People run everything from dead-stock street cars to highly modified racers.

I've seen open-wheel formula cars running in autocross.
