Sadly yes, I felt my IQ drop within the first paragraph. Thinking Cortez is some articulate genius should disqualify you from journalism.
Why can’t we just send all the boomers to Pakistan with @vantexan and then vote against their unfunded entitlements.
France tried it, and millionaires are leaving by the thousands because of it. 12,000 millionaires in 2016 alone. Highest rate of wealth flight in the world.
The rich have greater mobility and ability to move assets than any other group. And placing a 70-80% tax rate on anybody is madness.

I don't have any problems either if 70% starts at $10 M.
The fact that the National government is extorting any percentage of the income is onerous so the amount is secondary.
The only problem is that there are ways to change compensation from personal income to some other type of income ... in time and ownership comes to mind.
Look at doctors and how the Pharma industry pay for trips for the doctor and their family to a 1 hr per day educational seminar that lasts a week and it's in Hawaii or a Caribbean destination.

You’re young, and devoid of context, so you get a pass.
Some of the USA’s best days were when the marginal tax rate was 70%.
I’m not advocating going there, but, to be fair, that used to be the norm, and the world didn’t implode...
The rich were still rich, the economy did just fine, industry lumbered along at a brisk pace, etc.
Granted, we were coming off WWII, where of course, as the winner, and with Europe destroyed, we were set up to be the most winningest country evah!
Sure, things are different now, but my guess is we could swing the pendulum back towards some kind of parity.
I think these are the two mistaken arguments of Krugman's:
1) Diminishing marginal returns ("Come on, you won't miss all that extra money anyway!")
and
2) Pointing to the much higher post-WWII top marginal tax rates and tying them to the higher rate of GDP growth per capita. The US economically dominated the post-WWII world in which Europe and Asia were rebuilding, and big third world economies had not yet merged as major players.
US GDP growth per capita was bound to decrease in an increasingly globalized and competitive world economy, regardless of what the top marginal income tax rates were.

Krugmann has a history of stupidity and goofiness.
I do like his ideas but they tend to be fringe stands involving questionable logic.
He reminds me of Chomsky in many ways.
In this instance, OAC's math inadequacy is not the 70% tax but the assertion that a 70% on the rich would pay for 'Medicare for everyone'. That will not even get close to paying for it.

At this point it’s not even doubling down on stupid destructive policies, it’s quadrupling down.
Hey guys remember that time we raised everyone’s taxes and fought a war on poverty.
Let’s do that again. It’s only given us some of the most costly entitlement programs out of any country ever.
They won’t be happy until 60% of my earning leave my check every week.
