You CAN shoot 5.56 ammo in a .223 chamber but not recommended. Mostly because a .223 has a tighter chamber and it would have increased pressures.

The cartridges are almost identical but not quite. Dimensionally a 5.56 round will usually fit in a .223 chamber but its a bad idea because of the higher pressures.
