Actually 5.56, .223 is a tad different. You can shoot .223 in a rifle with the barrel marked 5.56 but cant shoot 5.56 in a rifle marked .223

but you can shoot a .22 through a .223!

You CAN shoot 5.56 ammo in a .223 chamber but not recommended. Mostly because a .223 has a tighter chamber and it would have increased pressures.
