He threw a tizzy fit and tried to get several drivers to peer pressure me into delivering it but I held firm that I would not deliver that package without a union member helping me.

That's ridiculous, you done the right thing. I don't see how delivering a 100+ pound sofa up steps can be defined as working safely good call.

No, I was working in the hub while I was in school. I alluded to that in my initial post, "...The hours, pay, and benefits provided by UPS to the part timers is unheard of anywhere else and definitely makes going to school possible..." And I directly stated it at the end of my post, "...This is coming from someone with a BS in Biology from a state school during the years I was accruing enough seniority to drive." My argument was never that the US wasn't the most expensive in the developed world. My argument was that a part timer at UPS can afford a higher education from a state school if he/she is willing to make the sacrifices.

The fact that a top rate driver could afford a higher education is axiomatic. What would be far more interesting to hear from you is how he/she would solve the time conflicts of going to school during normal business hours, while working full time.

well i dont think u do go to school and work full time, or its going to be very difficult if u do. when i did railway school, this guy worked from 1600 to 0300 and went to school from 0800 to 1600 and somehow managed to pass his tests. he was the smartest guy in the class. there are countries out there that are sensible enough to pay their student while they are in school. this guy at the last railway job i did worked full time when school was out and went to school besides the summer. the railway job i worked at before that did not allow their workers to go to school: either school or railway not both.

but i ultimately dont think it should depend on a corporations to decide whether their workers are able to afford school or not.

i mean the government has the military provide housing, food, pay for fighting a rich mans war...

they should be able to do that college students, and could do that quite easily if they cut the military with is bigger than the next 6 largest militaries combined.

I disagree. Financial aid provides more than enough to cover school costs as long as you don't :censored2: around. Living at home while :censored2:ty (and not ideal for one's social life) will make state colleges affordable. The hours, pay, and benefits provided by UPS to the part timers is unheard of anywhere else and definitely makes going to school possible. Even if you run out of FA, by that time you'll accrue enough seniority to be able to pay for school in installments that can be paid off before the semester ends. By no means am I saying it's easy and without sacrifices, but it's possible. This is coming from someone with a BS in Biology from a state school during the years I was accruing enough seniority to drive.
Kind of painting with a broad brush there.
Every hub doesn't offer tuition reimbursement and I'd hardly call 17.5 hours a week at $10 an hour unheard of pay. When it comes to Financial aid everyone's situation is different. Lots of middle class kids aren't helped much by it. Their EFC is too high even though their parents don't really have the money to pay for tuition. I'm not saying it's not possible, but I wouldn't recommend my hub to someone trying to pay for school.

SCV good to go sir.

The combination of the hours, pay, and benefits is unheard of. I wasn't talking solely about hours and pay. You are right that lots of middle class kids aren't helped much by FA as that was the case with me initially as well. To get around that, one can put school off until they're old enough to file as independent despite living at home (~24 years old). As for tuition reimbursement, that's why I said nothing about it. At my hub, it's only offered to part time sups and I think it has to be a relevant major to UPS.

quit this job and quit college too. its a waste of time.

get a backpack and see the world for 10 years and then go on the dole for the rest of your life.

its not worth being part of the rat race anyways.
I've always wondered how it would be to just haul off and forget about everything, live however you can manage and live freely, if I had no family and no hobbies i would do this.

...she then took my ID card and told me id be escorted out of the building. I begged her to give me another chance and that i am attending college on UPSes money so this would be horrible for me getting fired and all...
That right there is the biggest mistake you made out of all of that. Never beg for anything.

Did it make you feel like a big man to chew out an 18 year old kid?
