You started this thread complaining that the posters on BC don't adhere to your standards. You complained that people tend to talk to one another and you don't like that. You whined about necroposting, but most of that is done by new members that don't bother to read the stickied threads on the first page.

I dont expect anyone to live up to my standards, and I dont have a problem with people "talking to each other."
I just think it clogs up the forum when people choose to "talk to each other" via one-word text messages in multiple folders that are totally unrelated to the topic being discussed. On other forums, that is known as "thread hijacking" and it is frowned upon. It can also hog up bandwidth on forums with small servers, and it slows down browsing on an iphone in areas with poor reception (like my route) when one is forced to scroll through multiple pages of off-topic posts.
As far as the necroposting goes, it is frequently done by a long-term member here and it can create similar issues when I click on the topic, wait for it to load, and then find out that it is a 5 yr old thread with a couple of text messages tacked on to the end.

I have pretty much agreed with you ever since I joined BC. You have posted many informative posts, all the dog pictures not withstanding.

But, expecting this forum to be just the way you want it to be is not, will never be what you want.

But this isnt just about me. Its also about potential new members who come here looking for feedback, advice, or just a place to vent. I am worried that too much time spent scrolling thru necroposts and off-topic banter will cause them to go away.
I guess that is an issue for Cheryl and the mods to figure out. I was just offering an opinion, nothing more.

I can see both sides honestly. And I say this as someone who is probably grouped into that "annoying" category.

On one hand I look at this site as an escape. We all work long hours. UPS isn't the touchy feely kind of place that most people seem to work. It's probably the one place outside of our buildings where there is a group of people who understand what working at UPS is really like. I don't see anything wrong with blowing off some steam and having fun. We don't exactly get to have fun at work. But here, we can kind of let go. There is nothing wrong with that. I think sometimes we have so many rules and methods at UPS that we get robotic, having it be a little loose is a good thing.

On the other hand I can kind of see the frustration of going into a thread you may be interested in and having it be completely off topic. But, how many threads in this situation are truly new? Most of the threads I see that get blown off topic almost immediately are the same ones we've seen 1000 times. Socks, Orion, 9.5 list etc. The others are troll threads. The necroposts I'm on the edge about. It can be frustrating, but we should encourage the use of the search feature because it helps eliminate those double threads.

There just has to be a balance. But at the same time we also have to remember one thing. Nobody is forcing any of us to post here. We all find different things funny or interesting. There are some popular members I can't stand, and they can't stand me. Everybody is different, and we need to recognize that. If you want a tailored experience to your liking, you have to tailor it yourself by using the ignore feature. I use it for a few trolls, and it makes the experience much more enjoyable.

Here is the thing though, not everybody vents the same way. Some people run, some eat, some listen to music, some rant on the internet. I vent in NF by posting funny gifs or messing with some fluffers. Just because you don't vent that way, doesn't mean every doesn't.

And on top of it, I get being a scared newbie. We've all been there. Should we go easier on them? Probably. But at the same time, blowing sunshine up their rear isn't prepping them for the job. It's a whole different world at UPS. I don't think sugar coating everything to make the experience better on the website helps them when show up Day 1, but I also don't think being a jerk preps them any better day 1.

I don't think Cheryl gives a hoot about what is being posted on any thread as long as its not something that is forbidden (like porn) that could get the site in trouble. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the way internet forums become profitable is by the number of 'hits' they get? The more hits the more one can charge for advertising. NF2 I think would be classified as BC's Cash Cow.

Hits only count for revenue if pay per view ads are displayed. Members do not have any ads displayed on the forum.

I know no one has any reason to believe me but I seriously try to keep this free and fair.

There needs to be an off-topic section cause this has nothing to do with UPS discussions. That can be very annoying to some also.

It is nothingness fluff, leave all threads be about what they are. Quit over taking them all would be my suggestion to the guilty, and you know who you are.

My annoyance isnt really important. What IS important, in my opinion, is to get new members to stay here at Brown Cafe and contribute. Which they wont do if they feel like their threads will get hijacked or their time will be wasted. Just my opinion.
