Hedges may have been referring to the AGM-114n which under the "Variant" section at the link above, the 114n has thermobaric properties.
which according to ricky bobby he should have known if he had been a combat reporter for 25 years. If he had been serious about his craft he would have known the hellfire came out as a tank killer in his early years and evolved over the years as the need changed.
