KING Of GIFS
You can't say the Republican guy leading now will get the nominee and be elected.

  • Late winter 2015: Jeb Bush led in polls. Faded and Trump became the nominee.
  • Late winter 2011: Mitt Romney led and became candidate but lost in general election.
  • Late winter 2007: Muddy picture with Edwards, Giuliani, McCain and Romney all jockeying. McCain eventual GOP nominee who lost.
  • Spring 1999: Bush 43 was ahead in polls. Got the nomination in 2000 and won.
  • Spring 1995: Bob Dole was well ahead in the polls, became nominee but lost in general election.

We’ve got a Kennedy thinking about throwing his hat in
If he does it’s all over but the crying from the repubs

Less incentive to replace him now that it’s clear that he’ll be running against Trump.
What makes it clear

There are Republicans who are eternally loyal to the God Emperor (even if they don't want to admit it right now) and there are Republicans who will split the rest of the vote among the other candidates. It'll be enough for Trump to be the guy again.

The debates start in August. I wouldn't say it's a foregone conclusion before then.

Rush Limbaugh pointed out about the crowded Democratic field in 2020 that most of them knew they had no chance. But forever more they'll be known as the "former presidential candidate."
