The field was unclear in March 1975 and Arizona Senator Morris Udall was in a slight lead. Jimmy Carter was down the list and even lost the first few primaries. He wasn’t THE guy early on.
The point is the presumptive leader at 18 months out almost never ends up as the nominee.
