THE TRUMP 2024 THREAD

Of course a labor leader is going to go to bat exclusively for workers. No problem with that. But people aren't just workers. People are consumers. 40 years of free trade has made life a hell of a lot cheaper for people and opened up goods and services and markets and opportunities that he's not, and you're not, including in this argument.

Again. If closing up our economy and shrinking imports works then I'll join the ranks of the shocked and surprised.

It won't work. Business will close and move even faster. Layoffs will pile up. Unemployment is going to spike.
No, manufacturing will move to countries that are more open to American products. China is too one way on trade. And more big ticket items will be made in the States. When you factor in the transportation costs of importing goods then products made here get more competitive.

Sorry, but I don’t care anymore.

China sells us something. We get the good. They get the dollar.

When you go to a sandwich shop, do you pay them in sandwiches or dollars?

You pay them in dollars. You get the sandwich. That's how trade works. Trade imbalances don't automatically imply that something's wrong. lol

Ya'll need Macroeconomics 101 like, stat.

I'm sure corporate leaders just forgot to include costs of transportation.

When China greatly restricts our products from entering their market, while also stealing our proprietary technology, then getting away from China is Macroeconomics 101.

You're a little behind the times. Businesses are already diversifying away from China and have been for a good while now. The free market is smarter than a few political heads of state that want to desperately look tough to the uneducated.

Anything that's heavy and bulky will absolutely have greater shipping costs from China than if it were made in the U.S. When you factor that in, plus all the problems associated with dealing with the Chinese, then American made is worth a little extra.

They sure are. In the last couple of years. But we have tons of stuff still made in China and imported here. To the tune of more than half a trillion a year in trade imbalance. Just how uneducated are you?

The trade imbalance isn't an emergency. They get money, we get the products. China buys U.S. Treasuries. There's a benefit to the United States in the stable exchange rate we have with China which comes from the Chinese buying Treasuries. Not to mention they help us by providing loans to us. We get to fund government services without having to tax the crap out of people.

Both countries are better off. You can't punish your way into prosperity. Ask Napoleon or Adolf Hitler. We're not going to conquest our way into an even better way of life.

The Cycle of International Trade

  1. U.S. imports more from China than it exports → China accumulates dollars.
  2. China needs a place to invest those dollars → It buys U.S. Treasuries.
  3. Buying Treasuries keeps the yuan stable → This helps China maintain its export-driven economy.
  4. The U.S. benefits from cheap borrowing → It can fund government spending more easily.
Hope this helps illustrate why it's not all doom and gloom to have trade. Even if it's not perfect.

By the way, we stole plenty of technology from Great Britain and Europe since before our economy was even beginning the industrialization process.

Come on guys. He might be into importing illegal immigrants for their cheap labor but he's also anti-RTW.
