When I got hired you had to have your Military obligations over (Vietnam draft you know)- you had to be 21 to be a driver (and I assume male because nobody had ever heard of a female driver) -and you had to be married (they wanted people that were committed and responsible). I don't know IF the marriage thing was Company wide but it was where I was. I was told right to my face to get married and I would be made full time. I had tried to go full time before but and they said "sorry".
