Vietnam, Taiwan Capitulate: Offer To Remove All US Tariffs, Boost Investment

Peter Navarro says Vietnam's 0% tariff offer is not enough: 'It's the nontariff cheating that matters'

4/7/25

“White House trade advisor Peter Navarro said Monday that an offer by Vietnam to eliminate tariffs on U.S. imports would not be enough for the administration to lift its new levies announced last week.

"Let's take Vietnam. When they come to us and say 'we'll go to zero tariffs,' that means nothing to us because it's the nontariff cheating that matters," Navarro said on CNBC's "Squawk Box."

The examples of nontariff "cheating" cited by Navarro included Chinese products being routed through Vietnam, intellectual property theft and a value-added tax.”

Every country needs to be considered individually. If reducing tariffs to 0 is only smoke and mirrors then it doesn't help us much.

So Trump uses made up numbers to lie about the tariff rates other countries are charging us. Then when those countries offer to drop their actual planet Earth tariff rates to 0 it's still not enough. Good stuff.

You are basing your belief on totally made up tariffs on somebody online thinking he figured out the formula used to come up with tariff numbers? It's the whole package. Tariffs are the attention getting part, but using every trick possible to beat us out of money is pretty standard for a lot of cultures. Trump is telling them the fun and games are over if they want to continue participating in the world's biggest, most lucrative market.

But you're focused on "made up tariffs" instead of everything a country does to keep us out of their market. That's what Navarro is getting at, that it's not just about tariffs. Until countries don't rig their system to keep competitors out, which costs us jobs, then getting their tariffs, made up or otherwise, down to 0 really isn't helping us.

I don’t disagree with you.

But terminology matters, and the optics of this don’t look good for the us.

We said their tariffs were the problem, and now we’re saying that it wasn’t their tariffs that were the problem.

Feels like a global PR nightmare waiting to happen if other nations follow suit.

What you want is an exact, follow the numbers, don't color outside the lines, take you by the hand and give you a blow by blow explanation of Trump's negotiating style. And if he doesn't you're going to question everything as if you've found proof of nefarious ulterior motives. Lighten up Leroy.

And after two disastrous days the market settled down as real headway in getting his agenda accomplished came about. The reason the market didn't collapse even further is investors saw a buying opportunity and came back in. That's not what panicked investors do.

No, what I want is the truth and a kernel of an idea of a plan

Trump posted a board and made false claims about what was going on. He led us to believe that it was based on reciprocal tariffs, so obviously people were on board with it initially so it only seemed “fair”

Then we learned that’s not the case and he was basing it off trade surplus, and then the objective of the tariffs multiple times
