Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman is good too. If you like the kind of progamming found on Science, History, etc. (I do as well) check out Top Documentary films where they have over 2k films and programming you can watch for free. Some are absurd and off the map but a lot more are very good and an excellent educational resource for kids.
I have been watching the multi-part documentary Metal Evolution on VH1 done by Sam Dunn, film maker and anthropologist. No music form emerges from a vacuum and Sam does a good job of showing the root of metal music from classical, jazz and early blues/rock.
