Would it really be that difficult for the company to develop software to track those hours on a daily and weekly basis, highlighting those drivers getting close to going over?

There is a DOT HOS report in GTS. And any Sup worth his salt runs it every day. Shows hours worked last 6 days and last 7 days, Next available work time, and hours available.
Every driver should know how many hours they have available and every Sup should know exactly how many hours every one of their drivers has available for that day. DOT HOS violations are about the stupidest issues we have at this company.
Had one of our newer guys tell one of the bosses today that he was going to be out past his 60 hour mark due to too much work...Boss looks at him and says and I quote, "go over 60, and don't bother coming back on Monday."
It's on the driver to make sure he is within DOT regulations including daily hours, weekly hours, and weekly reset. Management can dispatch you however they please but they cannot make you work past 14 hours a day or 60 hours a week. If they instruct you to work over your allotted DOT hours then this is one of those times where you get to NOT work as directed
