By definition, they may have been proclaiming Christians, but if you search the scriptures you will see Christ, The Messiah will say, Depart from me, for I never knew you. Look for it, I will provide it for you if you can't find it.
As for the second part, currently we do have many self identified "Muslims" that do many violent acts in the name of "Allah" and claim to be Islamic. Self identified Muslims say it is not people following the tenants of their religion. You tell me, is there a difference?
