UPS diad cannot scan a momentum barcode. I'm sure we have a lot of ex-upsers out there imitating what we have done. Not hard to figure out at all. Momentum is still out there just outsourcing their work through another carrier as this article shows:

Ex-employees protest job loss

For eight days former employees of a local parcel delivery company have been picketing because they believe they were wrongfully terminated.

Workers of Momentum Logistics Inc., 3500 NE Waldo Road, claim they were replaced by subcontractors because they chose to unionize.

Four charges have been filed with the National Labor Relations Board against Momentum Logistics for allegedly violating the National Labor Relations Act.

The company subcontracted its work to Rapid Link Delivery Service Inc., which took over the Waldo Road location.

On Thanksgiving eve, Momentum employees were asked in for a meeting after all deliveries were complete, said former employee Tom Cormican.
"I just thought it was another driver meeting," Cormican said.

Employees were restless and asked to leave, but threats to their paychecks kept them quiet, he said.

A supervisor made the announcement that Momentum would be subcontracting its work leaving everyone unemployed.

Workers formed the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 385 earlier this Fall, according to the U.S. National Labor Relations Board charge.

Momentum's Headquarters in Jacksonville denied the allegations stating the subcontracting was motivated by financial reasons.

"It's an unfortunate thing," said Kathleen M. Wentworth, director of human resources for Momentum Logistics.

Wentworth denied further comment.

The "Gainesville Terminal" was the only branch of Momentum where workers voted to unionize, said Clay Jeffries, secretary treasurer/business agent for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

"That's the only branch that is being outsourced," he said.

Vicki Kenna, president of Rapid Link, said she hired all sorters, two supervisors and about nine of about 20 drivers who worked for Momentum.

"I hired everybody that wanted to be hired," she said.

Kenna said she originally told the drivers she would hire them for less than the average $450 a week Momentum pays.

When Rapid Link's budget was complete, however, Kenna realized she could pay drivers the same salary as Momentum, she said.

The drivers would be employed as independent contractors. They would have to use their own vehicles to make deliveries or lease a vehicle - Momentum provided drivers with vehicles.

Rapid Link would not recognize the union because the drivers would be independent.

"There's nothing else I can do," she said.

Eric Woods, former employee, said he wants his job back under
Momentum. The 25-year-old said he needs the job to support his family.

"I was a very hard worker," he said. "It had nothing to do with our work. Ithad to do with our union."

Momentum has refused to bargain in good faith with the Teamsters union, according to the charge report.

"The charges are under investigation," said Karen LaMartin, an assistant regional director of the NLRB.

Hope it does not destroy your conspiracy fantasy butmunch.

could be seen as a bribe, but also could be, and possibly in UPS point of view, reward for being aware of your surroundings and working safely, yet effeiciently.

Accidents happen from being either careless, distracted or unaware of your surroundings, imo.

and yea i know my spelling needs work.

I think he may be referring to a runway extension at Mather Field (formerAir Force Base)just east of Sacramaneto CA. UPS and a couple of smaller cargo haulers use the facility. The county approved this extension of 2000 feet to entice more delivery companies to start using the facility. All the experts wanted an additional 5,000 feet. There is still an option for another 3,000 feet pending for installation at a later date.

It was not done for UPS. In fact, UPS and others recommended an extension of 5,000 feet. It was done to attract cargo carriers who land at our "International" airport north of Sacramento. When they do this they interfere with passenger flights and cause a bit of turmoil in their system.

I don't see how this would create new jobs for UPS,

You should report every injury. That enables your CHSP committee to look at it, and it may help them to eliminate someone else from getting hurt in the same way (faulty flap in a trailer, sharp edge on a belt or in a package car).

We all get bumps and bruises, and not all of them are avoidable.

With the new Goodyear tire, we are all in for some good racing this year.

I think it will take a driver's ability to set up the handling on most tracks to win races.

Actually EXIT63 was referring to a 2000' extention to one of the runways at Louisville International Airport. As you may know, Louisville is the major air hub for UPS in the United States. At present the planes are not being used to 100% capacity due to the runway not being long enough to allow for the additional weight. Once completed the planes can carry 100% of their capicity without fear of running off the tarmac.

There's a link to an article discussing this on the Browncafe Homepage. Cheryl does an excellent job of posting UPS related news items on the Homepage and if you don't take the time to do this you really should.

I do have one question and admit to having mixed emotions but how much of my tax dollars went to pay for this? I've no doubt we will benefit and so will the local, state and Fed in the way of increased tax revs. but just remember if we can have tax dollars to benefit us so can the FredX folks. My Libertarian blood tells me local private concerns including UPS should have paid for this project.

Whats to say that Big Brown can't just say we outsourced and subcontracted the work because of economic reasons???

With the new PAS system going in nationwide, The job is becoming more and more automated. Loaders will need 10 minutes of training. Delivering will be directed by the DIAD and I'm sure will soon include left turn right turn instructions for each stop. And $450 bucks a week with no benefits as opposed to about $1500 including benefits, It would surely make it worth their efforts to take such a step. And with all the automated dispatching, I can see some supes going with us.

Never say never, and with Bush in power, a strike or even a threat of one by a vital tranportation company could be seen a a breach in National Security and like the air traffic controllers, we could all end up on the street. I know I'm a bit of a pessimist but money controls this country and if UPS could cut their labor cost by 60%, It would be worth the risk.

The Teamsters would go bankrupt inside of a year and that would be the beginning of the downfall of unions as we know it. All current retirees would be screwed too with no money being paid in to support their pensions. Just what the republicans have been striving for since the Molly Maguires of the coal mining strikes. Keep us poor and at the mercy of the boss man and the company store.

Think about it.

Boxes arent safe from rain anywhere in my truck. The roof has been leaking for nearly two years but the mechanics are forbidden from sending it (and many others) to a body shop. Any paperwork, call tags, checks etc, must be protected in a dr bag or they will be soaked in no time at all.

It is sad to see people posting that they want us to lose an account just because they don't like handling it. It is also sad to see the way some of those packages get treated - for whatever reason.

Packages = jobs.

Bonus: they usually are avoidable if you are following methods.

Example: I would say a dogbite is unavoidable if the dog came out of nowhere while you were already out of the car.

Ahhh yes, but can you follow the methods, and do your 10.5 planned day within the 9.5 they expect?!? NOT!

Most accidents and many injuries are avoidable by following the methods and staying aware of your surroundings, but not all.

It is a patently false statement to say UPS considers all accidents and injuries "avoidable", because they don't.

Work safe, work efficiently by the methods and you don't have to be concerned about standards.

File Article 12, Section 1 grievances if you are being given 10.5 planned days regularly if you are in the Central Supplement. Find the appropriate local language if not.

File Article 37, Section 1, subsection C of the National Agreement if your local wording is insufficient or being continuously ignored.
