The physical abuse of your body and the stress that comes from the company will shorten your life. Some of my fellow employees were gone within 6 months of retiring. One was the Business Agent. I bailed on day I achieved 30 years. Received my first pension check the next day. I've been retired 27 years this May. Live on a lake and enjoying sitting on deck watching the view and wildlife and of course, fishing. I was a union steward and seen so much pressure management put on employees. Every person has their on agenda on life and when to retire. I felt the longer an employee was under this stress, the shorter their life would be. The comment on looking for surviving classmates, look for surviving managers or fellow union employees. It would be interesting to see the percentage of managers to union who passed quickly after retirement.Wait until you are in your 50s, 60s or 70s, then look for surviving classmates.
It will be an eye opener.

Good info.
The survivorship option is very expensive, especially if you take one hundred percentGood info.
As I am retiring soon, I have wondered what to do with my 401k. Roth conversion? So you'd pay tax now to move the money, but not when you eventually withdraw it?
Also, that widowers option bothers me. That is a huge loss, much more than what he was estimating. Here, we lose well over $1000 per MONTH.
I guess I should go see an advisor. Looked at this guys site, but he's in Ohio. Road trip? I dont think so, need someone in Mass.
Lots of important decisions to make before retirement probably worth paying a good advisor.Good info.
