I think it should be chores that go above and beyond.


Like normal chores of make the bed,take out the trash, do the dishes you do when they need done for free. Then add extra chores each week that they can do for allowance money. Like rake the leaves, fold laundry, clean the toilet.

Making them do chores to earn money is a good way to make sure they appreciate when they get extras. Good thing IMO.

A couple more years and they can get a paper route or something and earn their own money. I made my own money (paper route and working at a mink ranch) starting in 4th grade. I drove my own Moped to school starting in 5th grade.
