I heard something on NPR a long time ago that if you went by what the GNP of the country was at the time, and what the wealth of the individual is and made a ratio of the two figures, George Washington was not only the richest president but the wealthiest person ever in America.
Ratio being : total wealth of individual/GNP of the country when the individual was alive.
