The problem is the nicer trim levels of cars nowadays don't have manual transmission as an option. You want a manual, no problem, but you'll also get manual windows and locks. Then manufacturers say, look, there's no demand for manual transmissions, so we'll make less of them. Self fulfilling prophecy.
