I had an interesting experience as a customer.
A couple of peaks ago I ordered a gift for a relative and it got shipped UPS Ground. Not really a big deal to me because the depot is in the same city I live in. It gets attempted and a note left on my building's door (I live in a secured apartment building). I call the automated line thing to have it held at the depot to pickup so the driver doesn't have to waste any more of their time. I get a call a few hours later from a gent (supervisor?) confirming my request and saying the box should be available later that night.
I drive over to the depot at the appointed time. At this point, there are a bunch of delivery trucks all over the place, personal cars leaving, etc. I get out of my car and walk to the entrance and am somewhat confused because the door is sort of propped open but the lights are out inside. I go in anyway (door said customer service entrance) and use my phone as a flashlight to see in the dark. All doors inside are locked, nobody around, no one answers when I call out. wtf
I go back outside and the door clicks behind me.
! Door is now locked. At this point I'm about to get my notice and call the number when someone (employee?) drives by and tells me that the service counter is closed/points out another door (sign reads Authorized Personnel Only). She tells me to go in there. I walk over to the door and try the buzzer. Nothing happens, no indication that it even works. Door is unlocked so I go inside. I'm now in the warehouse section of the building with conveyer belts, miscellaneous packages strewn about, people meandering around. Drivers in uniform, package handlers (?, street clothes), clerks/supervisors (dressed business casual). They acknowledge my presence but otherwise couldn't care less that a stranger is wandering the warehouse. I laugh as I see someone use a cart to transport some beat to hell and haphazardly taped back together boxes to another part of the warehouse; if it weren't for the trucks and the uniforms, I'd guess I was in another Fedex station.
I finally come across what appears to be a dispatch office or something and walk in. A few drivers are milling about along with some office personnel. Again, no one seems to care that I'm there until I start talking to them. They do locate my package quickly and a I produce my Fedex employee ID as proof of identity (they are amused by this). I chat with them a bit about peak season, Happy holidays are exchanged, and I escort myself out of the station the same way I entered.
