Here's the twist on this new variant story. South Africa has had almost no covid cases and a very low vaccination rate. The virus continuously mutates and most the variants just go unnoticed. Just like the flu virus there will always be new and different strains.

The Americans didn't like the reporting coming out of Africa so they basically zeroed in on a random mutation in Africa and blamed them. Biden banned flights within 30 minutes from the media first reporting it.

If this variant is used politically (surprise, surprise) my money is on all the lockdown, vax, and mask won't be necessary because of the brilliant leadership of Biden.
