Half Empty? NFL

It’s just perspective. My kids all love sports. They don’t have previous generations to compare them to.

Honestly, I can’t even watch old games anymore. I like Barry Sanders highlights and Walter Payton highlights but it’s all just quaint now compared to Tyreek Hill, Patrick Mahomes and the other new players that show up every year.

I’m ready for Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Breeze, and Phillip Rivers to move on. It’s a young man’s game.
Sammy, another one from NFL films.
I loved Gale Sayers, I do to this day, I'll toot his horn, not that he needs it.

It’s not just the NFL.

In soccer, FIFA is the biggest thing going and their level of corruption and nonsense makes Goodell look like a choirboy.
I was thinking that the only thing that could hurt the NFL would be a corruption scandal but even not sure that would hurt .

Corruption almost killed boxing even though it took almost 100 years. I followed boxing all my life but can not tell you who the heavyweight champ is.

It seems like college sports is heading towards paying the players. That's sad . I was upset with the dream teams with pro players in the Olympics but that happened because of all the cheating by other countries using pros. I thought why can't they just clean it up instead of giving in?

You were absolutely right when you said it comes down to money. It almost always comes down to money.

Nothing can be pure anymore. Maybe I am naive but I was lucky to grow up partially in the heyday of the major sports. Football, baseball, and basketball. Maybe it was a little earlier than I remember in the 60's. the 30's-40's-50's. There was probably some corruption of course but the money was not that big then.

Show me today's Earl Campbell? Walter Payton? Lee Roy Selmon? Jerry Rice? Joe Montana? There are great players today but I haven't seen really solid teams for some time now like the Steelers, Cowboys, or Raiders. New England is winning against lesser teams. Those teams if playing today would be playing with today's equipment, coaching, etc and would dominate.

1985 Chicago Bears Roster on StatsCrew.com

As good as the Chicago Bears were, there is no way that an offensive line that had 0 players over 300 lbs would stand a chance against the likes of Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman, Leonard Floyd and Bilal Nichols.

And as awesome as Sweetness was, there’s only so much even the greatest would be able to do.

Don't discount how agile they were. Just not seeing the overall level of play today as a team. Great individual players for sure, but the level of team play on both sides of the ball is lacking today in comparison.

Just like younger people to think they are superior to previous generations. 20 years from now you'll be remembering how good players like Khalil Mack were and some kid will be telling you they couldn't compete today.
And when he points to a 6’7” 297 lb. outside linebacker that has 4.3 speed, I’ll agree.

It's always been that way.

Most sports leagues have been watered down by expansion and the salary caps. Look at the early Yankees , the Celtics in the 60's, the Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns in the beginning . those teams could not exist now.

It will be fine

Athletes are always getting better. That’s why records keep getting broken. We know more about nutrition now than we did 40 years ago. There’s a lot of money behind maximizing player production through proper training and health habits. You don’t see many baseball players smoking anymore, there’s a reason for that.

Check out Paul Anderson. Holds record for most weight lifted in recorded history. And don't forget that earlier generations worked harder physically than most people do in ours. Doubtful our athletes are tougher overall. Boxing heavyweights in the 70's were far superior to today's fighters.
