Yes I do,He bought it in 67 ,I was 3.I went up every weekend with him and had a ball. Its in S.Maine on a lake.He did alot for all 17 nieces & nephews we all went there. But when the other kids hit like 10 or so they wanted nothing to do with him.My brother and I stuck by him till he died>He owned his own trucking comp & we both worked for him as teens, till he closed down .THANK YOU TED KENNEDY [deregulation]When he got older I took care of the repairs on the Cottage & my bro took an afternoon job so he could take him to all his Dr.s apptmnts, andwe both took care of him> It was nice to see all the cousins crying at his funeral & saying how wonderful he was! God that irked the $hip out of me.Had to vent, that song just sparked me & sorry for the long answer TRPL I burried him in Oct & still miss the old guy !!We put a plaque on the mantle place in his honor with his Ted Williams signed ball next to it!

I too had a favorite Uncle pass away in October last year. My brothers & I wrote down a bunch of his favorite sayings and put together a collection of pictures with him so we never forget his humor & wisdom. His funeral & wake were well attended and it was truly a celebration of his life. After the luncheon everyone that wanted to could share a favorite story or memory. It was a great experience to hear what his friends shared that we never knew about. Unfortunately nobody videoed it.

During Speedweeks at Daytona I felt his intervention. Friday night before the Truck race I was down on the infield during driver intro's and looked up at the Goodyear Tower above victory Lane and wondered how cool would it be to watch a race from there. Saturday morning a Goodyear rep was visiting new friends in the RV lot and offered my brothers & I 4 tickets to the Nationwide race.

Now if I could only pick some lottery numbers with his help...JK.

No need to apologize, that was a wonderful story. I enjoyed reading it. I am truly sorry for your loss, my Mom passed away this last Halloween and I miss her alot. So I know where you are coming from here. The best part now, is you have many wonderful memories that your cousins can only wish they had.
thanks & sorry about your mom may they both rest in peace!!!!

My Dads birthday was march 12th. Hes been gone almost 3 yrs I play Stevey Ray Vaughn for about a week after every year. It makes me feel him close by. My favorite am station was playing a few songs on that day too, never before had they had that music before going to break, and I thought Wow that is weird, and cool.
Whenever I would go over he was always watching Old nascar tapes or listening to music, Peter Frampton was another he liked. Kinda neat to watch your Dad enjoy the same stuff you do. And that is the wonderful thing about memories.

She was gonna be an actress, and I was gonna lear to fly.......................I go fly, so high, when I'm stoned. One of my favorite songs, of all time, have it in my iPod.:peaceful:

"Cats in the Cradle" was my favorite as well. I always stop and think when I hear that song to be sure that I am not forgetting the 2 most important people in my life, Megan and David.

When I was a kid I was selected to the All Star team for my local Little League. Our first game started at 5. My Dad closed his book store at 5 and I was hoping that he would close a little early so that he could come watch my game. He didn't and, wouldn't you know it, I hit a home run in my first at bat and he wasn't there. It was funny because I was last in the batting order and was moved to 4th for the rest of the tournament and didn't do a thing after the home run. Point was he wasn't there and, 36 years later, I still remember that as though I were rounding the bases and looking in the stands only not to see him there.

Both of my kids were very active in sports and I would often be seen in uniform at their games, truck parked somewhere out of harm's way (didn't want to have to explain a foul ball through the windshield). They both knew that I wouldn't be able to make all of their games but both knew that I would make those that I could and both appreciated that. In fact, there was one softball game my daughter was playing in when I jokingly told her, "Do something, I have to go back to work" and she went out and hit a double.

Work is only the means to provide for what it is you truly want.

Thanks upstate, very nice story.:happy2:

I have always liked Harry Chapin too, I like story telling songwriters. "W.O.L.D" and"Taxi" are my favorites followed by "Cats In The Cradle".

He's my all time favorite. Must have seen him 10 times before he died.

My favorite song of his is "Story of a Life". You have to have some age behind you to appreciate it.

Holy shoot. I am a big Harry Chapin fan and love all his songs. A lot of his songs were seven minutes long and hence didn't have a chance of making the radio. "Taxi" made it because he had friends call up a major boston station and request it and their playlist determined the play list of about 7 other stations throughout the country. The trick was tried again with WOLD but they caught onto it quick.

Surprisingly , cats in the cradle came about because his wife found his little black book and realized that these sort of sheenanigans only contributed to him not being home even more often. This resulted in him taking a poem that she, Sandy wrote and put it to music as a reminder to him about his son and what would happen if he wasn't there as he grew up.

I love every song harry did with the exception of one, it was on his "dance band on the titanic " album. The song is based on a poem by his grandfather(who was a respected poet when he was alive) and hence he might have been constrained in making the music fit the lyrics.

It is hard to state my favorite song of his, but push comes to shove. I would say it is " What made America famous"

Pretzelman, I have seen your moniker before and when I have , I always thought of this Harry Chapin song. (see lyrics below). Seeing that you are a fan, did you choose your name based on this song?

Pretzel Man , by Harry Chapin

He's the little pretzel man, he's got his twisted pretzel hands
He's got his a pretzel wife, that he's loved all his pretzel life
And he's got himself a pretzel girl, that they both brought into their world
And watch them all twist pretzels by hand, by hand
And if only we all lived in Pretzel Land

Six days a week, when he wakes up
She will fill his coffee cup
Six days a week he is a working man
He wheels his wagon to the park
He sells pretzels 'till it's dark
But that's the only life that he understands
He's his own man

He's the little pretzel man, he's got his twisted pretzel hands
He's got that pretzel wife, that he's loved all his pretzel life
And he's got himself a pretzel girl, that they both brought into their world
But watch them all twist pretzels by hand, by hand
And if only we all lived in Pretzel Land

On Sunday, when they go to church
In the seventh pew they perch
They listen to his sermon and they believe
They're grateful for the food they ate
So they put their money in a plate
They've heard of hungry children and they grieve (they believe)

So we watch them all twist pretzels by hand, by hand
And if only we all lived in Pretzel Land
If only we could all be like that man
If only we all lived in Pretzel , only we all lived in Pretzel, only we all lived in Pretzel ...Land

Pickup,

Yes, You figured it out. I have every Chapin album plus any bootlegs and memorabilia I can find.

Every so often his family does a concert where they all play his songs. What an amazingly talented family. His father still can play the drums, and his daughter has an amazing voice.

She sang a version of "Tangled up puppet" that didn't leave many dry eyes in the audience.

I chose Pretzel Man because its about a hard working family guy. He doesn't have much, but he works hard, tries to do the right thing, doesn't complain and tries to help others.

"Hang in there!"
Those of you that like "Cat in the Cradle" may want to hear a song by Luther Vandross titled "Dance With My Father".

What was your favorite Movie/TV show/thing to do?

I remember my whole family gathering in my Mom & Dad's room to watch all of the old variety shows, like Flip Wilson, Carol Burnett and movies, like The 10 commandments, Dr Zhivago ( My Mom's favorite), The Sound of Music, to a name a few.

All of the music we listened to,was on the A.M. band. My sisters had their 45 record storage cases. I bet if I tried, I could remember all the minute details from yesterday.

BTW, I grew up in the late 60's, early 70's.

Yeah, the rotary dial, with the distinctive sound when dialing. I still remember my phone number, from when I was growing up. I guess UPS was my destiny.:wink2:
