Chikungunya virus epidemic
Dengue fever epidemic.
Zika, Malaria, yellow fever...
Wishing to dabble in encephalitis?

Why don't you just shack-up with a senorita in Santa Fe, near quality hospitals. With all the handouts she gets, the $800-1000 apartment will be next to nothing. Running a 220v A\C unit in a shared apartment is only $10-20/mo extra.

Maybe @rickyb will move in with you.
find somewhere with low cost of living and high life expectancy. life expectancy varies widely within countries. in america the lowest is the lowest in the western hemisphere pine ridge native reserve.

Wasn’t there some sort of a local bacterial issue you also had in Mexico?

I’ve heard other first hand accounts - yikes.

You would have just gone back if you were attending to a short term family issue - NOT viable long term.
My dad is 85. I came here to help him at 82 after a knee replacement surgery. I left for Argentina for 3 months but came back because he nearly died from heart failure. I tried to leave once more after he got better with a pacemaker but lasted 2 weeks in Mexico after getting a parasite. I had no issues in Argentina. I've known people who've lived in Mexico for 10+ years with no issues beyond some distress when they first got there. My experience is some.people handle it well, some don't. I don't. But most Argentina cities have modern waste treatment systems. So not an issue for me there and I went to 4 different cities. Most people I've known in Mexico are careful about water usage. They also treat their veggies with a widely available anti bacterial spray.

I've been saying from the very start that it's not perfect. But if you have limited income in the States it'll go a lot farther in a lot of countries. If you are fine with barely getting by and hoping you don't have some sort of costly financial event then by all means stay in the States.

...you can make it anywhere. Ever hear of Paraguay? Not touting it as some amazing place but quite a few Americans and others are moving there. It's a very freedom oriented culture but not an anything goes culture. It has its issues like every place but if you look at this video you can see that if you have limited income you can go to even 3rd world countries and have a decent life. Paraguay has invested in internet infrastructure. Possible to get high speed fiber optic internet there. What that means is you can go to a place like this and stay connected to friends and family. Can have tv and Netflix in English. You can have a normal life there, and a safe life, for a lot less. And across the river in Argentina I've discovered a nice city of about 400,000 called Posadas. Has very good shopping, movie multiplex theaters including an IMAX theater. So what's the catch? Very hot weather. Long summers with mid-90's to low 100's with humidity every day. But they have cheap hydropower so can run your air conditioner 24/7. Winters are Florida mild.

There are a lot of options worldwide thankfully. And if your retirement income only goes so far in the States you can more than double your spending power elsewhere. You can proudly stay poor in the States, being loyal to the powers that be who weren't loyal to you, or you can choose to love the U.S. from afar. Your life, your choice.

Haven’t you already tried Colimbia and some other 3rd world countries?

I've met a lot of ex-pats around the world. Except for the guys doing business, they are all weird people.
Lots of kiddie porn lovers too. You find them in guay, tina, gia, ania, odia...they keep 1 step in front of the Federales.

A decent 2 bedroom apt here is 1800 a month here.
I know where I can get a RV space in a nice little park for $200 a month. Includes water, trash and wifi. Buy a decent travel trailer and live there.

But you do point out the reason I posted this to begin with. A lot of places aren't affordable for retirees on SS and not much else. Some of these guys like to snort and scoff but it's a real problem for a lot of us. I don't want to be dependent on my family and I don't want government handouts. When I turn 67 my income will be about $24k a year. My posts aren't about slamming the U.S. Just an acknowledgement that quite a few of us are being priced out of this country.

8 million+ Americans living overseas and you've got them all figured out.

I know how important it is for some to have success and feel superior to those who didn't. And when those who didn't find a way around the keeping up with the Jones it really rankles some. How dare we not know our place? Look at all they spend to maintain their lifestyle. Not for me, never was. But you enjoy that lifestyle if you can afford it. If you go broke you can always move overseas.

LOL.
No need to feel so inferior.

You like to spin things like your dumb comment: “you’ve got them all figured out”.
I said” I’ve met a lot … and they’re all weird except businessmen”.
Typical of you.
When you leaving?

Sorry, but I don’t care anymore.

You took a lot of flak for this thread, but I don’t disagree with your premise that it’s a valid option.

But why are all the people in these lower cost of living countries trying to come here then?

No such thing as a free lunch, and my guess is what you gain with cost of living, you probably have to give up in quality of life.

If you’ve ever seen more than a tourist hotel or resort you’d know why a few months or weeks here and there are not descriptive of what it’s like to live in some of these :censored2:holes.
Not to mention the huge target Americans have on their backs.
The locals know Americans are rich, by their standards.
I’ve seen the worst. Some insist on learning the hard way.
