It was hardly a school when I started. If you could drive, deliver, pickup and be reliable, you got it. Show up on time, do your job, and don’t do stupid stuff. Period.

I had a 2 day ride along with the District Manager) He trained me in. After that I was on my own for the next 30 years. It was either the District or Division manager-whichever is lowest. I could never keep those two straight. I heard later on that he was nominated to train me because he was staying at a fancy resort locally and our center manager was on vaca - no where to be found.

I never went to any UPS school--period. I was still using that as an excuse right up until I retired. It used to really piss some of the management off.
I never went to a school and by the time they started having them they didn't bother sending me to one. Maybe the fact I had already been doing the job for years had something to do with it.

I applied for a job there around 1984? Wouldn't hire me because my mom's cousin was a manager there.
Yep used to be that way. The year I started a driver that was married to a clerk went in to management. One of them had to quit so she did. Best thing that happened in the early 2000’s was sons being helpers. Was quite a few that had a smile on their face and said “This cat is going to learn what work is”

Sorry, but I don’t care anymore.

Same, you couldn’t have a relative that worked there

My route started in a high top p600 (air brakes) to the AG center then a bulk stop at the Woolworth”s. If I was fortunate I would be able to unload then start my residential in a p500 by 11 Good times. I never want to deliver in one of those trucks again

P1100 had the air brakes and power steering , was a controversy when the feds came out with the CDL , nobody had air brake endorsement and refused to drive those

Driving around, as a passenger, in the “brown bus” out of Broma with LT for orientation with a group of ten new drivers was the scariest thing I’ve ever done in a brown uniform.

I can’t believe you brought this up. I’m going to have nightmares again tonight.
LT. The instructor right ??
We had sheet writing class then drove in the fish bowl we called it , youd think we were at Paris Island the way he yelled at us ,, i got the job & spent most of my years in Watertown. I think of those days when i take a load to Brockton ,,

Yes, If memory serves me L.T. was the Division of maybe District Safety Manager around 2000 or so. I’ll never forget him screaming at an automotive supervisor over the phone about an expired sticker on one of those training cars. They postponed using one of those training cars a day because of it. He was livid and didn’t hide it. I want to say my full time driver orientation had around 50 of us from all over eastern MA and RI. Every one of us came from inside.
