Job Type Temporary

Hi, I own and operate and hot dog stand.
I will be selling hot dogs and Caribbean style chicken sandwiches Aug 11 & 12th, downtown Edmonton (Churchhill square).

I'll need 2 helpers for that weekend, and 1 of them for a few hrs for help setting up.
Hrs are apprx 8-8 pm each day.
Pay is $200 - $300 cash for the weekend, depending on your work ethic.
(Expect a high paced environment) !!

Those that have a food safety license will be first considered, and also anyone with a pick-up truck or (mini) van that can help with set up and tear down.

Would be also awseome if any of you could supply a slow-cooker for this event.

John

Geezus, any more demands you wanna place on your help????

Also, 300(tops) for 24 hours of work . That comes out to 12.50 an hour. And you complain about UPS not offering enough pay to entice workers to sign up? hmm low end , 200 dollars, comes out to 8.30 an hour.

Cheapskate!!!

I think many people would work for $300 cash for the weekend, just to catch up on bills. Plus get all the free entertainment and having a great time at the job.
We shall see how many respond.

That didn't take long - first response already ! :)

I would totally be able to help you out this weekend. I used to own my own restaurant a few years back and then consulted on opening a brand new restaurant. I have just moved to edmonton from ontario and would love to be able to work this for you. I do not have my food safety license. We did not need one in Ontario. I may have access to a truck. We have one and I could see if my husband could help out for that time to make use of the truck. I work hard and understand a fast paced enviroment. You can contact me back by email if interested to set up a time to connect either by phone or in person.

$8.33 to $12.50 an hour, with NO overtime; What is minimum wage there?

I just checked, if the reference I looked at is current, the minimum wage in Alberta is 9.40 an hour.

So let me ask you this, are you going to pay the necessary taxes on this wage income or are you going to hide your transaction by paying cash? If the latter, you are a hypocrite talking about Romney supposedly not paying taxes.

taken from somewhere out there:

Cash Payments
Your boss can pay you in cash. This is legal. But he must give you a record or “pay slip” every time you are paid. A boss paying you in cash may not want to give you a pay slip because he wants to avoid paying the employer contributions, such as Employment Insurance (EI).
If your boss doesn't deduct EI from your pay, you may still be entitled to your benefits. You can claim it later if you have dates and hours written down. You will not have to pay any EI deductions later, your boss pays.

oh pick-up, like you never hired someone to do a paint job or car work, or whatever else and paid them cash !

One down and 1 more to go :) Then I have my 3 helpers :)

Thanks that sounds great!!! You will not be disappointed in hiring me. Hubby works full time right now during the week so his weekends he needs to rest. He can help though with the truck to set up and tear down though. That is not a problem. So go ahead and look for someone else. I have no problem putting the food out. We should meet sometime this week so that I can get an idea of exactly what we need to do. I may have some suggestions as well. I will also check to see what I may have in the likes of a cooker for you. Thanks for this opportunity. Let me know when and where we could meet up to chat.

$300 for the weekend is really not that bad. I wouldn't do it but I know that my son would jump at the chance. He is a 25 year old FT college student and $300 to him may as well be a million. Getting paid under the table is the norm for this type of arrangement. I do agree that asking them to provide a truck and/or a slow cooker is a bit much. Are we to assume that you will be feeding them on your dime while they are working?

People with a truck will get extra paid , of course. Because that would be the person that helps set me up on Friday, and would get paid extra for the trips back and fourth.
Geez, I'm not that cheap, and of course they'll get free food.

Most people do have a slow cooker at home, including myself.
But, trying something different this time (marinated Caribbean Jerk Chicken) and hot slow cooked, spiced up, sauerkraut for the wieners.
Also will have fresh cut veggies such as lettuce, tomotoes, cucumbers, red peppers to accomadate the fresh chicken bun sandwiches and also for a "Garden Dog" or "BLT dog".
Will have fresh schredded cheddar, too.

I hear there might be 1 other hotdog vendor there, whom I happen to know, who simply puts on a kraft cheese slice on his cheese dogs, has no fresh veggies.
I'll make sure I blow him out of my competetion. His prices are slightly higher than mine, too !
I'm also serving bakery fresh crusty mini submararine buns for the dogs and chicken.
They cost almost 3 times the price as reg hot dog buns - but should make a huge difference taste-wise.

$300 ???, It might be $200. Sounds like the money amount is still not decided upon. I hope there is one smart guy in that group of 5 workers that can convince the others that once the event starts that they will have Klein by the balls. They can band together and force Klein to sweeten the pot, if not.. walk off and take the truck and the slow cooker with them.

The formula is simple :
Since I'll have an ever-lasting line-up, it boils down to quick service.
The faster we put out food, that more they'll earn.
$250 is about the norm - just over $10/hr cash, but if they do well, and we get tips, could be easily $350 or $400.
It all depends how much the entire stand earns and of course how well each one performs.

Oh I think I was a bit premature in saying that the money offered and other terms were a bit below what is fair. I forgot that for the two days that the workers are there, they get to be exposed to the world's smartest man. Just imagine how they will feel as Klein educates them on gun control, the greatest countries in the world ,etc. I am sure they will be thrilled to hear his "mein kamph" as he regales them with stories about his unfair treatment at the hands of UPS , the liquor store owner, et al.

Considering this, I no longer think the money offered is a bit below what is fair. I now say it is OUTRAGEOUSLY low. These workers should be offered 1,000 dollars a day each and provided mental therapy for at least three weeks after the event.

All kidding aside... I normally find many of Klein's posts laughable and sometimes outrageous. I shudder when I think of how he lost his job with UPS. But all that aside...

When my father came home from WWII. His work ethic was incredible and exactly what the USA is all about. He set up his own little business on a very busy corner in Chicago. Guess what? It was a hot dog stand! He eventually started an Italian Resturant. I understand how incredibly hard that business can be.

Klein, I support and admire your effort to continue to move forward and take responsibility for your well being and not relying on Canada for your support.

Much success at the Caribbean Fest.
