Split open? You'd be amazed at how minimal the visible wound is from a high speed .22 caliber round at close range. Yes, even the exit wound from a fmj round is tiny.

I understand the round was a 5.56 round (heard reporting, haven’t checked to verify). So a 5.56 round fired from an AR-15 style can literally blow a huge hole out the back. One victim in Maine was 14. Several of the dead were unidentifiable by sight because of the tissue damage.

It’s the speed of the round fired from these types of weapons that’s so damaging. Not the round itself necessarily.
