Well said, Warren. Unfortunately, it's a very different world at UPS today and a very different world at Local 804. There are people posting their political messages on here as they ignore the facts, the obligation of UPS to follow the contract and the obligation of Local 804 officers and representatives to protect the best interests of the members.
Fact #1. The current officers and representatives of Local 804 won the last election. The members have entrusted them to continue the representation that they have provided for the past three years for another three years.
Fact #2. UPS is now, has been in the past and will continue to be in the future a difficult company to deal with or work for. UPS has elevated harassment to an art form and will run rampant over it's employees whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Fact #3. The recent action at Maspeth was the latest example of UPS blatantly violating the contract. The contractual language is clear. "The Union agrees that it will not cause or permit it's members to cause strikes of any kind, stoppages, or any other interference with any of the operations of the Company during the term of the Agreement, so long as the Company abides by the procedure for the settlement of disputes and differences and the decisions of the arbitrators as provided in this Agreement. UPS failed, no, actually refused, to abide by those agreed upon procedures for the settlement of disputes and differences. The Maspeth drivers, their Local 804 Business Agent and the Local 804 Executive Board has made it clear that they will not tolerate the reckless dismissal of contractual language that was negotiated by the parties in good faith.
The actions of the 250 Maspeth drivers should be applauded. The actions of all who stand behind them should be equally applauded, including the actions of their Business Agent, their Executive Board and area political leaders who have spoken out in support of those drivers. Those critics of these events, who sense some sort of political gain in the Maspeth dispute, should be ashamed of themselves. The next local union election is a long way off. There will be plenty of time for you to grovel in the muck of capitalizing on the difficulties of others. Let this one be while the real leaders attempt to resolve the issue.
