Why would a company be paying August 1 at 12 AM? they won’t be the contract would be over.

I could see a scenario where they cover COBRA payments for people who cross so they can keep their insurance- assuming you can do that with union run insurance? Or just make the routine payments for those who cross? No idea how that works.
